20 quarantine questions meme (with lots of spoons) (and not the metaphorical kind)

1. Are you an essential worker?

...I mean, I'd say Yes for society as a whole. But No for immediate survival needs in the midst of a pandemic.

2. How many drinks have you had since the quarantine started?

Alcohol, none. Don't enjoy it. Energy drinks and sodas are a different story. In theory I could give up drinking them now that I never need to be awake at any specific time, but I...have not.

3. If you have kids... Are they driving you nuts?

No kids, but my cat keeps coming up to pester me, and then I have to stop whatever I'm doing and brush him for five minutes. (He literally did it while I was typing that sentence.)

And he seems to be experimenting with a strategy of "pat the human lightly with one paw for more attention," but hasn't totally worked out how to do that with his claws in.

A cuddly cat

4. What new hobby have you taken up during this?

Polyphasic sleep!

(Not totally new, I did it for a while once...all the way back when I was in high school, during summer vacation. Couldn't keep it up for long because RL schedules intruded, but I remember being pretty happy with it.)

Started on April 8th with the regular 30-minute naps every 4 hours. Some of them end up being "30 minutes of lying very still in a dark room and not falling sleep before the timer goes off," and so far one of them has always turned into "spend this whole 4-hour period asleep," but it's still closer to 6 hours of sleep per day than 8-9. We'll see if I can condition myself to get it down to 3.

5. How many grocery runs have you done?

Since this all hit the news: 2.

A big one from a few days before the governor ordered Total Lockdown Of The State, and another one 3 weeks afterward. (Wasn't near the verge of running out, but my parents were worried.)

6. What are you spending your stimulus check on?

...I've been putting some money toward my spoon collection lately, so you know what, let's count that.

Back in high school, I decided that every time I went somewhere, I was going to find a souvenir shop and get one of those touristy novelty place-branded spoons. So far, so good:

Dual spoon case wielding

The big case, I've had for ages. The little one, I ordered a couple weeks ago from this site. It's in the UK, and the website isn't really set up to take digital orders -- but I couldn't find a single other place that sold them, so I just had to suck it up and email the guy and eventually figure out how to do a cross-currency digital money transfer via PayPal. And of course international travel restrictions were going up right around then...

But it came through! Arrived in a mountain of protective packaging, came out in great condition, and just look at how lovely they are together.

On top of case expenses: Up until now, I was diligent about buying every spoon on-site during the trip itself. Finally decided to go ahead and order some online, to fill in places I went before I started collecting. With the excuse that "oh, I would make a nostalgic visit and shop for them in person, but vacations are dangerous right now, so this is the Responsible Alternative."

(Obviously I'm not blowing the whole $1200 on spoons -- the rest goes to boring things like rent.)

7. Do you have any special occasions that you will miss during this quarantine?

The one-day-only theater singalong of the Steven Universe movie was canceled...no announcement yet about the 10-year college reunion that was supposed to happen in May, but, well.

8. Are you keeping your housework done?

It's a good way to burn off energy when I'm feeling restless but shouldn't be leaving the building, so yeah.

My lightswitches and doorknobs have never been so desanitized.

9. What movie have you watched during this quarantine?

Christopher Robin, Klaus, The Breadwinner, and Mary and the Witch's Flower.

My family's doing "all watch the same movie every week and have a group call to talk about it" as a structured excuse to have check-in calls every week. Next up is Detective Pikachu.

10. What are you streaming?

The medical shows I talked about last post, and the last 20 years of Eurovision finals.

...actually, I just finished running through all of those. And the one from 1969, because it was a 4-way tie and I had to see that. Currently working on semifinals.

11. Nine months from now is there any chance of you having a baby?

Good lord no.

12. What's your go-to quarantine meal?

Best case: boxed pasta, mixed with the supplements of spinach, mushrooms, black olives, and crumbled feta.

In between those: A mismatched plateful of whatever ready-to-eat items I pull from the cupboard and/or fridge.

13. Is this whole situation making you paranoid?

No more than usual. Just disheartened.

14. Has your internet gone out on you during this time?

It got real patchy for a few days, but I rebooted everything (router, modem, laptop) and that seems to have refreshed it. Fingers crossed it holds.

15. What month do you predict this all ends?

The total lockdown: July 2020. The incompetent federal handling: January 2021. The need for serious and well-coordinated international preventive measures, other than vaccines: December 2021. The regular hand-washing: never.

(There is zero authority behind these predictions, just a mix of guessing and hope.)

16. First thing you’re gonna do when you get off quarantine?

...go back to work, probably. I'm not diving back into restaurants/social gatherings/casual travel until we've had several non-quarantined weeks without a new outbreak.

17. Where do you wish you were right now?

A roller-skating rink. Or a nice warm beach.

18. What free-from-quarantine activity are you missing the most?

Fandom-related gatherings, and life drawing sessions.

19. Have you run out of toilet paper and hand sanitizer?

Got a 48-pack of toilet paper from Who Gives A Crap a few months ago, and it's still not close to running down (good, since they've been out-of-stock for months now). Didn't buy any hand sanitizer in the first place. Liquid soap and antibacterial wipes are where it's at.

20. Do you have enough food to last a month?

Yes. (Might be down to plain rice by the end, but I'd make it.)

So does the cat, though I'm not sure he'd believe it.

Sleepy cat

I'm so amazed by how much Fluff has come out of his shell! ♥ What a darling. (I hope he learns to keep his claws in for pats, though. XD )
