Yuletide 2016 Letter
Hello, prospective future Yuletide writer! Thank you in advance for the fic you are about to embark on. Here's a bunch of information to make it as easy as possible.
General likes:
General DNWs:
Characters: Ozma, but Dorothy wasn't an option and I will also be happy with a Dorothy fic.
I am all about the Dorothy/Ozma. Other favorite characters: Scraps, Polychrome, Eureka, the Glass Cat, the Woozy.
Likes: Dorothy coming into her own as a magic-user; Oz's magitech; Ozma having weird gender issues; diplomatic relationships with neighboring countries, especially Ev (Ozma of Oz) and the country of the Great Jinjin (Tik-Tok of Oz); Toto's deep nonverbal connection with Dorothy; Scraps being as clever as the Scarecrow, just a lot more whimsical about it.
Specific prompts: Some focus on Oz developing its own magical analogues of our-world technology (e.g. the pseudo-cellphone used in Tik-Tok), and the cultural changes that come along with that. Like the kind of developments that come in the later Discworld books.
And/or: a story about Dorothy going back to the US for a visit (maybe to see all-grown-up Cousin Zeb? or his descendants?), and having hilarious culture clashes now that she's grown up with Oz norms. Extra bonus points if she brings Ozma.
Really niche, if you're into historical research: we know Dorothy went on a cruise with Uncle Henry in book 3, made some friends on the trip, and stayed with those friends in 1910s San Francisco for a bit before heading home at the start of book 4. It never specifically says lesbians, but we're all thinking lesbians, right? Little Dorothy hanging out with an old-school queer couple, and cheerfully talking to them about her magical adventures, would be great.
ETA: I've been doing a major Baum reread lately, reaction posts on my land-of-Oz tag. Feel free to mine that for other canon feelings/potential story hooks.
Characters: Tip, Oh
This is listed under the title/media of the Netflix cartoon, but I'm totally fine with fic that doesn't reference anything beyond the original Dreamworks movie.
Likes: Tip-Oh friendship; the way the Boov use random human objects in hilariously incorrect ways; cool space exploration; weird alien gender and biology things; little shoutouts to book continuity.
I unreservedly love DieAnne, the punchy green alien from episode 11a ("Angerdome"). Didn't want to force a writer to match on her, but if you're up for writing about her, or can even give her a cameo, that would be fantastic.
Specific prompts: Futurefic with adult Tip being awesome at some alien-related profession. (Spaceship piloting? Interplanetary diplomat? Chasing down extraterrestrial fugitives?) If you've seen Lilo & Stitch, this would be great as a crossover -- whether it's central to the plot or just a name-drop of the legendary Agent Lilo.
Or, for something lighter, a fic dealing with how the Boov interact with the human LGBTQ community. (In a fun way, not a pedantic or issueficcy way.) Does their fashion sense inspire trends at pride parades? Does Oh get worked up trying to design flags for all attraction combinations of the Seven Glorious Boov Genders? Do any humans realize they might identify *as* Glorious Boov Genders?
Characters: "Stephen"
"Stephen" is my baby, and "Stephen"/Jon one of the OTPs of my heart. You can write pretty much anything with them -- fluffy, angsty, sweet, dysfunctional, canon-based, AU, whatever -- and make me happy.
Likes: canon-typical humor; the magical surrealism of the Colbert Report universe; role reversals where "Stephen" has to be the more put-together one in order to protect Jon; the canon alternate universes ("Stephen" as exaggerated liberal, "Stephen" where he's happy instead of angry...and of course the real world).
Specific prompts: Something with "Stephen" interacting with Janice From Accounting, the unsung star of Last Week Tonight. It seems like she's the only person who could totally stymie him -- an immovable object to his unstoppable force.
But seriously, pick any trope you want and throw Jon/"Stephen" at it, and I'll be thrilled.
ETA: I did a Jon/"Stephen" mini-primer a while back, with more OTP feelings + some of their greatest hits in canon, for anyone who needs a refresher.
Also: it's been pointed out that a too-open-ended prompt isn't helpful for everyone. So, if you're already running with an idea, ignore this! But if you're stuck: I would love a total setting AU. Fantasy, cyberpunk, vampires, Greek gods, Steven-Universe-style Gems (I have type suggestions!), Pokemon trainers...just write something with the same lovable characters in a completely different world.
General likes:
- hurt/comfort
- time travel
- culture clashes, especially one character in a fish-out-of-water situation
- taking a weird fantasy/SF situation and earnestly thinking through the logistics
- crossdressing
General DNWs:
- humorless or preachy issuefic
- character-bashing
- conflicts that could be resolved if the characters talked for five minutes
- hurt where the hurting character supposedly has close family/friends/loved ones in-universe, but still gets no comfort/support
- mundane AUs for fantasy/SF canons
- zombies
