Metatag survey results, part 2: The “All Media Types” Tags People Want
The long-awaited sequel to the results for question 1 in the Quick AO3 Metatag Survey: results for question 2!
(The AO3 upload of this post is now the definitive version -- any corrections/edits will be made there.)
The Question
Do you have any fandoms on AO3 that only have separate, non-linked tags, that you wish had a metatag?
(Example: some users who read fic for “化物語 | Bakemonogatari (Manga)“, ” 物語 – 西尾 維新 | Monogatari Series – Nisio Isin (Light Novels)“, and/or “物語 | Monogatari Series (Shaft Animation Studio Anime 2009)” have said that they would like a “Monogatari – All Media Types” metatag. This would be an umbrella tag where you can get all the works at once, but the works for each individual fandom can still be filtered on separately, similar to the metatags listed at the top of the survey.)
Again, list as many as you want, or leave blank!
Process notes
Some respondents listed all the different canonical format/adaptation tags a fandom is split across. Others just named the overall fandom.
I’ve tried to find all the relevant canonical tags — but I’m not in all these fandoms, so I’ve probably missed some, especially when there are adaptations/spinoffs with different titles! If you can fill in any gaps, please comment and let me know.
When the fandom tags have numbers next to them, those are “AO3 uses for each tag, as of the time I copy-pasted the info.”
The Numbers: Popular Demand
There were two runaway hits. Wranglers of these fandoms, if you’ve ever petitioned the chairs for an AMT and been rejected, here’s an extra-solid reason to ask again.
11 requests for an AMT for The Untamed/MDZS, which currently has all of these non-linked tags for specific adaptations:
- 魔道祖师 – 墨香铜臭 | Módào Zǔshī – Mòxiāng Tóngxiù (108052)
- 魔道祖师 | Módào Zǔshī (Audio Drama) (1228)
- 魔道祖师 | Módào Zǔshī (Cartoon) (13635)
- 魔道祖师 | Módào Zǔshī (Webcomic) (665)
- 魔道祖师Q | Módào Zǔshī Q (Cartoon) (781)
- 陈情令 | The Untamed (TV) (77001)
Selected comment: “it is functionally impossible to search for or exclude crossovers because 48,553 works use both tags [the novel and the TV series] due to people writing for a “”general”” canon which would be the perfect usecase for an AMT Tag.”
10 requests for an AMT for Good Omens, where these are the current canonical fandom tags:
- Good Omens (Graphic Novel) (80)
- Good Omens (Movie Concept 1992) (39)
- Good Omens (Radio) (1008)
- Good Omens (TV) (83255)
- Good Omens – Hare/Moody/Larnach (14)
- Good Omens – Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett (66757)
Nobody elaborated on this one. Probably figured they didn’t need to. The only comment was “Good Omens – All Media Types feels necessary.”
The Numbers: The Ones That Got Away
Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms isn’t the only generic fandom metatag that got synned to a specific adaptation. It’s just the one that was big enough to spark a backlash, and get the decision reversed.
Each of these got mentioned in the survey, mostly with some comment about how it used to be a canonical, and they miss it:
- Avengers (Marvel) – All Media Types (1232) – currently synned to The Avengers (Marvel Movies)
- Hannibal Lecter Series – All Media Types (4999) – currently synned to Hannibal (TV)
- James Bond – All Media Types (2603) – currently synned to James Bond (Craig Movies)
- RIORDAN Rick – Works (560) – currently synned to Percy Jackson and the Olympians & Related Fandoms – All Media Types
The Numbers: Other Metatags People Want
3 requests for a Trigun metatag, to link these:
- Trigun (Anime & Manga 1995-2008) (7482)
- Trigun Stampede (Anime 2023) (9320)
One person specified that they felt these 2 tags “should really be three canons with one metatag.”
2 requests for a Critical Role metatag, for these:
- Candela Obscura (Critical Role Web Series) (314)
- Critical Role (Web Series) (36410)
- The Legend of Vox Machina (Cartoon) (1658)
- “the upcoming animated The Mighty Nein series” [no fandom canonical yet]
One person clarified “mostly so that they’d then have separate tags for different campaigns.” A bunch of fandom tags that specify different individual CR campaigns are, as of now, just synned to the main CR tag.
2 requests for a Guardian metatag, for these:
- 镇魂 | Guardian (TV 2018) (5007)
- 镇魂 | Guardian – priest (1668)
2 requests for a Hellaverse metatag, for these:
- Hazbin Hotel (Cartoon) (31988)
- Helluva Boss (Web Series) (16010)
2 request for a Heaven Official’s Blessing metatag, for these:
- 天官赐福 | Heaven Official’s Blessing (Cartoon) (5913)
- 天官赐福 | Heaven Official’s Blessing (Webcomic) (3075)
- 天官赐福 – 墨香铜臭 | Tiān Guān Cì Fú – Mòxiāng Tóngxiù (29592)
2 requests for a Word of Honor metatag, for these:
- 山河令 | Word of Honor (TV 2021) (11012)
- 天涯客 | Faraway Wanderers – priest (3088)
1 request for each of the following:
The Adventure Zone – multiple separate campaigns, as well as non-podcast adaptations, are synned to The Adventure Zone (Podcast)
Avatar: the Last Airbender/Legend of Korra – original cartoon, sequel cartoon, live-action movie, live-action TV series
BanG Dream! – original anime, Ave Mujica anime, It’s MyGO!! anime, Band Party video game, AAside video game
Buzzfeed Unsolved/Watcher Media – web series, I’m not sure what else is/should be included

Rosemary Sutcliff’s Dolphin Ring books – per Wikipedia, this includes The Eagle of the Ninth, The Silver Branch, Frontier Wolf, The Lantern Bearers, Sword at Sunset, Dawn Wind, Sword Song, and The Shield Ring
Dungeons & Dragons – “D&D has a metatag but only for TTRPG & video game media–none of the movies are linked under it”
Grave Robbers’ Chronicles by Xu Lei “and all the TV shows based on it” – again per Wikipedia, I found The Lost Tomb (TV 2015), The Lost Tomb 2 (TV 2019), The Lost Tomb 2 but a different one (TV 2021), Ultimate Note, Tomb of the Sea, and Reunion: The Sound of the Providence
Grishaverse by Leigh Bardugo – looks like a lot of this is synned to The Grisha Trilogy – Leigh Bardugo
How To Train Your Dragon – movies, TV show(s?)

Love Live! – original anime, Idol Festival video game, All Stars video game, Sunshine anime/manga, Nijigasaki High School anime, Superstar anime, smartphone game, IRL musical

Moon Knight – comics, TV series
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu – Works – for all the novels by this author
One Piece – anime & manga, live-action, video game
Daniel Pinkwater – Works – for all the novels by this author. Respondent adds “or else some kind of “world” metatag for his stories set around Lake Mishagoo”
Rivers of London – novel series, I’m not sure what else is/should be included
Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System – novel series, I’m not sure what else is/should be included
A Series of Unfortunate Events – books, movie, TV series
Stranger Things – TV series, tie-in novels by Gwenda Bond, other books currently synned to the TV tag
Undertale/Deltarune – two linked video games
The Numbers: Everything Else
Some respondents asked about fandoms that currently have metatags.
In a few cases, it seemed like they just don’t know the tag exists already. (Still good to know. It suggests that tag wranglers should definitely not dismantle these, or even more people will be asking for them.)
In others, the person clearly explains how they wish the tag tree was different in some way. And, well, sometimes they didn’t explain, so I’m not 100% sure what they want.
Instead of trying to rephrase or interpret, I’ll quote most of them directly:
- “Fire emblem 3 houses/fire emblem 3 hopes should have a meta tag” [there’s a general Fire Emblem Series metatag, nothing for just these two]
- “Harry Potter whose main tag treats the films as synonymous with the books and is the parent tag for all the video games”
- K-pop
- “Peter Jackson LotR-verse” [there’s a general Lord of the Rings AMT, nothing for just the Jackson movies]
- “an actually useful MCYT one” [MCYT tags are currently subtagged to Video Blogging RPF]
- A Song of Ice and Fire & Related Fandoms
Extra Thoughts
This time around, a bunch of respondents pointed out that their list of “metatags they want” wasn’t comprehensive. That was the main note people had, really.
Selected quotes:
- “listen this is an issue in like. All the actual play shows i can think of”
- “I feel that any adapted work or work with prequels/sequels/related works would benefit from a metatag”
- “pretty much all anime and manga tags that are like that. [it] honestly keeps me from reading fic in those fandoms on ao3”
- “There’s way too many to list but I’m sticking to the ones I’ve written for or read from”
- “Tagging is really screwed in most multimedia fandoms tbh, which don’t have AMT.”
One last thing: This may just be a limit of my fandom-finding ability, but: I don’t think anyone requested new metatags for the kind of far-ranging sprawl of “Related Fandoms” that you get for Sherlock Holmes, or Arthurian mythology, or Dracula. Existing tags like that were mentioned in the “Metatags people use” results, but users aren’t particularly jonesing for new ones. They mostly feel the lack of metatags for unlinked groups of “one canon + a narrow range of spinoffs/adaptations.”
The only noticeable exception is the “Author Name – Works” metatags — collecting all the works by a single author, whether their characters/settings are related or not. Wrangling policy has been hostile to those for some time now, but 3 got requested here (Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, Daniel Pinkwater, and Rick Riordan), along with the existing ones that came up in “Metatags people use” (Austen, Lovecraft, Tamora Pierce, Shakespeare, Tolkien).
no subject
That is just my opinion though- if we were talking about this before they dropped the “from Bang! Dream” from the franchise title, I’d probably agree with you.
