October: "A Polish radio station that launched a channel run almost entirely by artificial intelligence – including having AI presenters – has decided to end the “experiment” after less than a week on the air following a backlash against the idea." Included bot-generated presenters who were supposed to be "model representatives of Generation Z" -- hey, you know what makes zoomers feel represented, if you actually hire zoomers -- and a fake bot-generated interview with a dead Polish poet.
Really impossible to undersell how terrible these things are, isn't it?
Rounding things off with a comic posted by The Jenkins in 2021. I’ve been archive-binging it recently, and was kinda amazed when I realized this was posted so early in the current “AI” hype train:
A cada dia eu odeio como a inteligência artificial se tornou uma coisa para criar medo, pânico, desinformação e mentiras que podem ser de coisas simples até criminosas. É nojento que ao invés de usar a IA para auxiliar em pesquisas médicas e científicas, ou para auxiliar a vida de todos as empresas fazem a IA para destruir tudo. Pior de tudo é ver que agora o AO3 tem uma tag de obras feitas por IA e que está descendo (estou até bloqueando os perfis envolvidos).
The tech that's currently called "AI" isn't fit for use in medicine or science, because those fields need accurate results. When people have tried to use LLMs for those purposes, they get the same misinformation and lies as they get with everything else, and it just makes things worse.
It's a good thing that AO3 has a tag for AI-generated work. That means you can reliably filter it out! Filterable tags are just as important for hiding things you don't want to see as for finding things you do want to see.
When I talk about AI in science or medicine, I'm talking more about controlled studies with the correct and necessary tools for this environment. I saw some articles about the use of some parameters of a specific type of AI that helped detect some types of cancer. It was a randomized trial that showed good results. That's what I want, technology in the resource of improving our lives, not now stealing our creativity, digesting and expelling garbage. It's sad that so many artists think that using AI as it currently is in their work is cool, because they would rather have a poorly made fake image than pay an artist or create it themselves.
The marketing people who are trying to shill "AI" are very invested in re-branding any kind of successful technology as "this is totally also AI, please think about this when you think about our LLM, and assume we could do something this useful too."
The companies selling generative AI (which is the only thing this post is about) have never contributed to any of the tech that has improved science or medicine over the years! It's really important to keep a clear dividing line between them. They're just...not related at all.
Sim isso é bastante real. Infelizmente aqui por onde eu vivo o pessoal não sabe a diferença, não informa e no fim a IA generativa fica sendo a única conhecida...
