Welp, that sent me down a rabbit hole of meme reading!
One thing that explains a LOT seems to be that SO MUCH of the original web reading experience was boosted by online stuff that couldn't be put in print! Like, at least two characters had Twitters that updated in real time and that could be interacted with, plus the CREATOR'S twitter and sketches and Patreon updates and meta. She seems to have been SUPER imvolved with her fanbase in a way that can't really be translated to print; it reminds me of how Carpe Diem tried to start out, back in 2004, only Ngozi Ukazu ACTUALLY managed to keep it up for years and years! That's a shitload of work; I could never have done it! And unfortunately, that work is basically chaff in the wind for the print edition. No wonder it seemed weirdly vacuous; there was so much other work that never saw the light of paper day!
