I'm not in Love Live either, but yeah, some of these heaps of tags are wild.
Metatags aren't just for linking series in the same universe! Consider Holmes & Related Fandoms, which covers a huge range of mostly-standalone canons. Or the Tolkien works tag, which is mostly his various series set in Middle-earth, but has some weird outliers too.
I feel like it's easier to include everything in a franchise, and then let users filter out the weird outlier if they want, than to try to establish "this is a specific metatag for everything in the franchise except the weird outlier." (Would be surprised if users didn't add the metatag to their weird-outlier fics anyway.)
