Honestly, I share a lot of the users' frustrations, so I'm really glad people expressed them. (...The people who were cool about it, anyway. Anyone who used it as an excuse to heap abuse and insults on volunteers needs to step away from their keyboard and go touch some grass.)
There have always been wranglers -- don't know exactly how many, but I know I'm not the only one -- who wanted metatags for certain fandoms, but couldn't get them approved. Based on the policy of "we're trying not to make them, because users think they're confusing and don't like them." Now, for the first time, we have a heap of overwhelming, unavoidable evidence to say "actually, look, lots of users think they're great." It's a nice change.
